Mr. Ali participated in an international conference on Youth Service in Italy from 4th March to 8th March at the Rockefeller Foundation conference center in Bellagio. This meeting presented an important opportunity to discuss the current status of the national youth service field; assess challenges, opportunities and priorities; and discuss the future role of International Association for National Youth Service. The conference was attended by the representatives of leading organizations in the field of youth service and engagement. Mr. Ali chaired a session on 8th March on finding new ways to support National Youth Service locally and globally.

British Council’s Enterprise Challenge engages young people in competitions that develop their entrepreneurial skills.

Each National winning teams has produced a short video of their enterprising idea so you can vote for your favourite video and help your chosen team become the British Council’s Global Enterprise Champions. A random voter from each participating country (Bangladesh, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Macedonia, Pakistan, South Africa, Turkey, Uzbekistan) and the UK will have a chance to win an I-Pod.

Teams of young people in participating countries are asked to develop a business idea from a set scenario which they present to a panel of judges which includes employers, entrepreneurs and Ministerial representatives. Teams compete with other national teams to become the National winners.

National winners are then asked to produce a short video which represents their entry to Global Skills for Employability Enterprise Challenge. This year participating countries include Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. The theme of their presentation is “If the Olympic / Paralympic Games were to take place in your country, what business would you develop?”

Launching Ceremony of Youth Social Enterprise Generator in Universities

YES Network Pakistan organized three launching ceremonies of Youth Social Enterprise Generator project. These ceremonies were organized in Sukkar IBA, Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIAS) and Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam.

The ceremonies were attended by several hundred people including faculty members, students and head of the institutions. Each ceremony was attended by over 250 people. During the ceremonies, representatives of British Council and YES Network Pakistan spoke to the audience and highlighted the need of incorporating social entrepreneurship course into the curriculum of higher education. The ceremonies were steered by the trained faculty members and students of these universities. During the ceremonies, case studies and ideas for social change given by young people were shared with the audience with the view to inspire them to join this new initiative. The heads of all the three institutions highly appreciated the efforts of British Council and YES Network Pakistan for launching Youth Social Enterprise Generator project in their University/Institute.

Orientation Sessions on Social Entrepreneurship

In order to ensure that Youth Social Entrepreneurship advances in the right direction and by the right people, it is important to create a second line of leadership who can provide adequate and sustained backing. YES Network Pakistan has trained a team of master trainers to advance the agenda of Youth Social Entrepreneurship in an organized and systematic manner in both technical and educational institutions of Pakistan. YES Network has equipped faculty members and students of 11 Universities and 2 Technical institutions (Government College of Technology, Karimabad, Karachi and Government College of Technology, Raiwand, Lahore) with adequate knowledge and skills for rolling out the concept of youth social entrepreneurship in their respective institutions.

Each workshop focuses on clarifying the concept of youth social entrepreneurship and on generating interest for the integration of social entrepreneurship into the curriculum of the technical and educational institutions. Several interesting exercises were conducted to identify gaps in the existing education system and to explore new ways of empowering and engaging young people. During one of the exercises, when faculty members of technical and educational institutions were asked to visualize where do they see young people of their institutions after three years. Majority of them wrote that they would be seriously struggling to find a place and job in the society. They would be more frustrated due to our inability to prepare them for smooth transition to work. It was very interesting to note that an overwhelming majority of the participants had no knowledge about the concept of social entrepreneurship. The orientation sessions encouraged innovative and creative thinking among participants. The workshop provided essential technical knowledge, tools, opportunities and resources to the participants to further explore the topic of social entrepreneurship and to take solid steps in rolling out youth social entrepreneurship education in their respective institutions.

National level Youth Social Enterprise Challenge Competition

A National level Youth Social Enterprise Challenge Competition 2011 was held in Lahore on 13^th December 2011 at Amir Hotel. Ten teams of young people were selected to participate in the National Enterprise Challenge 2011. Organized by the YES Network Pakistan and British Council, the Youth Social Enterprise Challenge Award is into its fourth run and is open to all young people studying in technical institutions across Pakistan. The Youth Social Enterprise Award was implemented in two phases. During the first phase, social acceptability of the program was created by conducting a series of sensitization sessions with the representatives of over 1400 technical colleges on the concept of youth social entrepreneurship. During the second phase, a series of orientation sessions were held to create awareness about the concept of Youth Social Entrepreneurship and to nurture and grow innovation and entrepreneurial culture amongst students of technical colleges. Over 20,000 students of public and private technical colleges are given orientation on Social Entrepreneurship and the process of getting involved in the competition. Over 1,000 ideas were received from the young people studying in technical colleges of Pakistan. 10 young teams in between the ages of 16 to 21 were selected to participate in the National Challenge to compete with each other. Before the competition, one day social entrepreneurship training was held with the teams to give tips and guidelines for effectively participating in the competition. The competition started at 9.00 A.M. and ended at 5.00 P.M. During the competition, all the ten teams were given a problem and asked to come up with a unique and innovative idea for improving the situation within a given fixed budget. By the end of the day, teams were asked to submit their idea for judgment through the completion of three documents such as their innovative idea, competitor’s outline, money matters and a 90 seconds presentation.

Mr. Ali Raza Khan participated in the policy dialogue on “Building the bridges between universities and communities” in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 7th & 8th December 2011. Speaking at the panel discussion, Mr. Ali said that “Universities have so much to offer in the shape of students, teachers, parents and physical infrastructure such as buildings, labs, libraries, etc. to address the real challenges of the communities. On the other hand, communities provide excellent settings to students to use their gained knowledge and skills in real life situations for meeting the unmet service needs of the society. It provides an opportunity to youth to become self-reliant and contributing members of the society. It helps them to break the serious disconnect with the society.” Over 30-40 senior level high profile delegates from the key stakeholder groups involved in the university-community knowledge exchange agenda, for example: Vice Chancellors, Pro Vice Chancellors, senior policy makers from higher education ministries, national agencies, NGOs and foundations, sector research centres, international and national donor organisations and apex agencies representing community interests from the following countries: UK, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka participated in the dialogue.

We are pleased to share with you that Service Learning, Youth Social Entrepreneurship and Youth Service Programs of YES Network Pakistan featured at the opening day of the 12^th Annual Population Research Conference in Lahore. The theme of the conference is “Pakistani Youth: The Ultimate Resource”. The conference is supported by UNFPA, UNICEF, Population Council and the David Lucile Packard Foundation. Mr. Ali Raza Khan, Chief Executive Officer of YES Network Pakistan was invited to speak at the first plenary session of the Conference. The conference was attended by representatives of leading international organizations, media, Vice Chancellors of leading Universities of Pakistan and several hundred young people. The work of YES Network Pakistan was highly appreciated and endorsed by everyone. Mr. Ali was also given an award of appreciation.
