Ten teams of young people were selected to participate in the National Enterprise Challenge 2011. Organized by the YES Network Pakistan and British Council, the Youth Social Enterprise Challenge Award is into its fourth run and is open to all young people studying in technical institutions across Pakistan. The Youth Social Enterprise Award was implemented in two phases. During the first phase, social acceptability of the program was created by conducting a series of sensitization sessions with the representatives of over 1400 technical colleges on the concept of youth social entrepreneurship. During the second phase, a series of orientation sessions were held to create awareness about the concept of Youth Social Entrepreneurship and to nurture and grow innovation and entrepreneurial culture amongst students of technical colleges. Over 20,000 students of public and private technical colleges are given orientation on Social Entrepreneurship and the process of getting involved in the competition. Over 1,000 ideas were received from the young people studying in technical colleges of Pakistan. 10 young teams in between the ages of 16 to 21 were selected to participate in the National Challenge to compete with each other. Before the competition, one day social entrepreneurship training was held with the teams to give tips and guidelines for effectively participating in the competition. The competition started at 9.00 A.M. and ended at 5.00 P.M. During the competition, all the ten teams were given a problem and asked to come up with a unique and innovative idea for improving the situation within a given fixed budget. By the end of the day, teams were asked to submit their idea for judgment through the completion of three documents such as their innovative idea, competitor’s outline, money matters and a 90 seconds presentation.

Speaking at the panel discussion, Mr. Ali said that “Universities have so much to offer in the shape of students, teachers, parents and physical infrastructure such as buildings, labs, libraries, etc. to address the real challenges of the communities. On the other hand, communities provide excellent settings to students to use their gained knowledge and skills in real life situations for meeting the unmet service needs of the society.  It provides an opportunity to youth to become self-reliant and contributing members of the society. It helps them to break the serious disconnect with the society.” Over 30-40 senior level high profile delegates from the key stakeholder groups involved in the university-community knowledge exchange agenda, for example: Vice Chancellors, Pro Vice Chancellors, senior policy makers from higher education ministries, national agencies, NGOs and foundations, sector research centres, international and national donor organisations and apex agencies representing community interests from the following countries: UK, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka participated in the dialogue.

PVTC is an autonomous corporate body established by the Punjab Government through the PVTC Act of 1998. Its mission is to alleviate poverty through Muslim charity (Zakat) and private sector participation by imparting demand driven skill training and enhancing employability for disadvantaged youth. YES Network Pakistan carried out a series of activities to incorporate the concept of social entrepreneurship and service learning in the curriculum of PVTC.

The duration of social entrepreneurship and service learning course is fifty hours. This includes 10 hours of actual class work to assist participants to get familiarized with the concept of youth social entrepreneurship and the process of development of a social enterprise plan and 40 hours of field work to carry out a service learning project to solve local community problems as part of education. The mark allocation of the course is based on the attendance (10%), unscheduled quizzes (10%), field work (50%) and presentation of field work by the participants (30%). Several thousand students of the PVTC are now being engaged in designing and implementing innovative community-based service learning projects to make a difference in the lives of other.

We would like to express our special thanks to Chairman PVTC, Mr. Faisal Ijaz Khan for his extraordinary leadership, judgment and initiative. A short time ago, we sat together to develop a road map to incorporate social entrepreneurship and service learning in the curriculum of PVTC and we were thinking “we will make this happen” and now today it has happened.

We would like to acknowledge the contributions of British Council for enabling YES to introduce the concept of social entrepreneurship in all technical institutions of Pakistan. We are delighted to share with you that YES Network Pakistan has integrated the concept of youth social entrepreneurship into the curriculum of University of Agriculture Faisalabad.

YES Network Pakistan carried out a series of activities to introduce and sensitize faculty members and students of University of Agriculture Faisalabad about the concept of youth social entrepreneurship and its need in the perspective of growing youth unemployment and unrest in Pakistan.

These efforts culminated in a formal memorandum of understanding (MOU) between YES and University of Agriculture Faisalabad. The course has been included in the curriculum of two disciplines (Population Sciences and Rural Sociology). We have received a letter of appreciation from the Chairman’s office which is enclosed herewith for your kind review. It is also noteworthy to mention here that the course is also included in the postgraduate prospectus 2011-12 (see attachment). We are very thrilled on this remarkable and historical achievement.

We must acknowledge the role played by the worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Iqrar Ahmed Khan and Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad Maan Professor & Chairman Rural Sociology Department University of Agriculture Faisalabad in providing us unflinching support to bring this change.

Service Learning Project Launched in Catholic Schools

YES Network Pakistan has launched Service Learning program for the first time in the educational institutions of Pakistan. YES Network Pakistan has been conducting sensitization sessions with the principals of the leading schools for the integration of the Service Learning concept. Recently, the Catholic Board of Lahore has approved the implementation of Service Learning program. YES Network Pakistan has trained and engaged over 350 teachers in the designing and implementation of Service Learning projects.

The workshops were conducted in partnership with British Council Pakistan. The purpose of the workshops was to provide an opportunity to young people to learn and be inspired for taking positive action in the society. During each workshop, several exciting and interactive sessions were held to engage young people in developing critical knowledge and skills regarding social entrepreneurship. The first session of the workshop focuses on dealing with two important questions: What is social entrepreneurship? And, what is the difference between business entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship. The second session aimed at developing critical thinking among young people about their future. Young people were asked to visualize where they see themselves after completing their diplomas and degrees. Majority of young people were very skeptic and pessimistic about their future. They were of the views they would be looking for jobs. The third session focused on identifying key characteristics of social entrepreneurs? Young people were informed that the key characteristic of a social entrepreneur is his/her ability to invent new ways of solving old and persistent problems. Young people were given an interesting problem and solution identification exercise. Young people found out that it was very easy for them to identify problems in comparison to identify new solutions. The fourth session focused on sharing the process of development of a social enterprise. Young people were encouraged to design a social enterprise by selecting a local problem. The hardest part for young people was to create an in-built revenue generation model for their ideas. The last session of the workshop focused on preparing young people to share their ideas impressively and assertively.

The students were very excited to participate in the sessions as many of them expressed that it is for the first time that they have developed this feeling that they can also become self-reliant and contributing members of the society. At the end, young people were asked how they would like to view their communities now and whether they tend to focus on problems—or possibilities. Almost all the young people stated that now they would like to focus on creating and delivering solutions rather than discussing problems.

The workshops were conducted in partnership with British Council Pakistan. Each workshop focuses on clarifying the concept of youth social entrepreneurship and on generating interest for the integration of social entrepreneurship into the curriculum of the technical institutions. Several interesting exercises were conducted to identify gaps in the existing education system and to explore new ways of empowering and engaging young people. During one of the exercises, when principals of technical institutions were asked to visualize where do they see young people of their institutions after three years. Majority of them wrote that they would be seriously struggling to find a place and job in the society. They would be more frustrated due to our inability to prepare them for smooth transition to work. It was very interesting to note that an overwhelming majority of the participants had no knowledge about the concept social entrepreneurship.

The sensitization workshops encouraged innovative and creative thinking among participants. The workshop provided essential technical knowledge, tools, opportunities and resources to the participants to further explore the topic of social entrepreneurship and to take solid steps in rolling out youth social entrepreneurship education in their respective institutions.
