Re-branding the image of Youth

"We should stop treating young people as empty vessels in which we try to pour
our wisdom; we need to look at them as the most promising resource available

Our Accomplishments

Our experiences of working with young people have shown us that trusting and enabling disadvantaged young people to set-up their own social entrepreneurship programs had several major outcomes such as getting work experience, building life skills, exercising leadership, establishing a new-identity, increasing self-esteem and meeting the needs of communities We measure the outcomes of program through qualitative and quantitative measures. Indicators for quantitative tracking and analysis include: number of people who provided services by each unique social venture, number of social entrepreneurship programs started, number of young people involved, amount of resources (land, service charges, human etc) generated, number of young people taking leadership role, number of new activities undertaken, number of new partnerships developed, etc.

Following is a list of tangible outcomes resulted under this program in a period of three years (till Nov 2007).

  • Engaged over 2000 isolated, socially-excluded and at-risk young people in a variety of community building activities and enabled them to enhance their capacity and re-build their identity in their communities.

  • Established and completed successfully over 150 female literacy centers with the help of socially-excluded and marginalized young girls. Majority of these girls were previously forced by their parents to sit in their homes after completing their matriculation. These girls have educated their mothers, young girls and elderly women of their communities in basic reading and writing skills.

  • Provided education, personal development, and skill building opportunities to over 7000 neglected and destitute children, young people (especially female youth) and adults.

  • Established over 100 indigenous Youth Service Networks to enable them to start-up their own social entrepreneurships programs throughout Pakistan. These Networks are providing care, support, education, skills development and income generating opportunities to over 10,000 people.

  • With the help of our youth service volunteers we have introduced IT movement in many of the hard-to-reach areas by establishing 25 community-based computer centers. Each computer center is equipped with 5 or more computers.

  • Launched and running very successfully first youth service program in Pakistan controlled Kashmir to enable local young people in re-building their communities. So far over 600 service volunteers (both male and female) have been involved in a structured manner to carry out rehabilitation program. These service volunteers are providing health, education, skill development, house construction and care services to all segments of population.

  • Many of our service volunteers have been able to continue their education after joining our program. Previously, they were forced by their parents to sit in their homes on account of social and economic reasons.

  • Many of our service volunteers have been able to find good jobs after getting experience of working in their communities.

Following is a list of intangible outcomes observed under this program through on-going monitoring and review of monthly reports submitted by each Functional Committee:

  • Young people rise out of anonymity (especially young girls).

  • Young people develop self-confidence, self-efficacy and the faith in their own abilities to accomplish tasks and missions not previously within their scope of achievement.

  • Young people re-establish a new identity in their communities.

  • Young people develop a sense of self-control and self-esteem leading to good will and pride.

  • Young people learn the ability to initiate activities and enjoy accomplishments.

  • Young people feel special/unique and integrated persons.

  • Young people widen concern for one’s children, elderly, work or ideas.

  • Young people increase levels of personal and social responsibility.

  • Young people increase awareness by participants of the needs of others.

  • Young people learn values more effectively through participation (rather than being lectured to).

  • Young people increase willingness to be active in one’s community.

  • Young people develop desire and hope in life and future.

  • Young people feel connected and not left out.

  • It has a profound impact on the way adult members of a community view the younger members.

Overall this program has demonstrated in a short period that once young people are provided structured and organized opportunities to start-up their own social entrepreneurship programs, they have the capacity to transform themselves from citizens in waiting to citizens in action, from apathetic to involved, from sheltered to shaper of society, from dependents to providers, from at risk to at strength and from victims to leaders.
