How We Are Unique Or Innovative?

Existing Players YES Network Pakistan How can our organization work with, leverage and/or improve on the work that is currently being done?

Existing Players (including government and several local, national and international organizations) interventions are designed to deliver services to young people. The Existing Players have no specific program for the integration of disadvantaged youth particularly female youth, which is comprised of the major chunk of the population of Pakistan (census 1998). Existing Players have no specific policy or program for the engagement of these disadvantaged young people.

We have pioneered the concept of treating young people especially disadvantaged youth as a solution to the problem. Our interventions are aimed at engaging young people in delivering services. Our organization has provided a constructive mechanism for re-integration of disadvantaged and marginalized youth particularly female youth into the society as citizens in action and not as citizens in waiting. Our program has assisted several hundred young people in re-establishing a new identity in improving their image within families and communities.

Our Organization is providing enough evidence to the Existing Players about the need and impact of adopting a pro-active Youth Engagement Model. It is playing a crucial role in meeting the needs of the forgotten, socially excluded and hard-to-reach youth. It is playing an eye opener role in introducing a very cost-effective model of youth engagement that aims at accomplishing several developmental goals simultaneously. Our organization is also playing a leading role in sensitizing key stakeholders of Existing Players for the need of treating disadvantaged youth as a resource in re-building their lives and communities.

Existing Players interventions are single domain. They are not designed to help young people develop a sense of connection with the community, a sense of usefulness, a sense of responsibility and a sense of caring among young people for their communities. It focuses on addressing the problems of young people by providing them information and services. Existing Players design high-cost programs for youth. Existing Players are focusing on what should be excluded in the lives of young people. Existing players designed interventions where the participation of young people is very low and loosely structured.

Our idea has in-built multi-domain components. We believe that lasting change occurs when youth develops a sense of connection, a sense of usefulness and a sense of caring for their community. The other main difference is that we are focusing on what should be included in the lives of disadvantaged youth instead of what should be eliminated from the lives of young people. Our organization has evolved a model, which provides a structured environment in which to work and learn, while contributing to the development of a new identity and a sense of purpose in life. We are also contributing to the important development objectives at a relatively very low-cost for government and other service providers. Our organization provides an organized opportunity to young people to take a lead role in designing and implementing social change projects.

Our organization can be of great assistance to Existing Players who are focusing only on the problems of young people. Existing Players current efforts are focused on developing trainers and providing information to youth. Our organization can pick up from where Existing Players left by engaging trained disadvantaged youth in an organized manner in delivering services to others. It would have a ripple effect on youth and the communities they will serve.

Existing Players programs are single domain program. Existing Players are making efforts to promote education and health at all levels of the society particularly in rural areas. The Existing Players spend high costs to develop infrastructure and to meet program related costs.

Our program is a multiple domain program. The program has incorporated several social domains such as disadvantaged female youth, family and community. A female youth led literacy center is used as a primary setting for effective positive change in other social domains. Our organization has demonstrated that the most cost-effective way to promote education and health is through local youth particularly disadvantaged young girls. We have demonstrated at various locations that young girls living in low-income communities can provide education at a very low-cost with many other positive returns.

Our organization is providing food for thought to Existing Players for harnessing and tapping the local resources in the shape of disadvantaged young girls for promoting and providing education. In addition to this our organization is also meeting the high unmet educational and health service needs of the communities through their own resources and helping Existing Players to meet its goals.

The Existing Players design and implement programs for youth, which are short-lived. They are not sustainable for a viable period of time. They often find it difficult to sustain the projects. Moreover youth participating in the interventions have no or very little motivation to stay connected with the program because of the absence of direct benefits to them.

The striking feature of our program is the revenue generation by the Youth Service Networks, which helps them to sustain and refine the quality of their services to the poor and deprived people of their communities. Our program is built on the principle of mainstreaming youth into community development process by providing them tools, knowledge and resources to deliver services to poor, neglected and marginalized people of their communities. Our program provides an opportunity to youth to generate revenue by providing services to the community. Mostly, they use this money to re-start their education or to support their families. It increases their motivation and provides them the foundation to transform their service activity into sustained civic action, from tutoring children to running a school or academy.

Our model of Youth Service Engagement is a living example for Existing Players to engage young people in a more structured and organized manner to reap countless benefits. It will not only help them to promote positive youth development but also spark community development. We believe that the problem free youth is good but a fully prepared and engaged youth is much better.
