Greetings to
the Members of
Pakistan National Youth Service

I am pleased to greet you on behalf of the hundreds of thousands young men and woman in many countries who are giving a year service to help their fellow human beings. The programs are known by different names, from Zividienst in Germany to Community Service Volunteers in UK. AmeriCorps in USA, Servicio Pais in Chile, the National Youth Service Corps in Nigeria and the Poverty Alleviation Rela project in China. National youth service programs are growing in popularity for several reasons. They provide valuable services to persons most in need; they provide a wide range of learning experiences to those who serve; they help to bridge the generation gap between the elderly and young people and they contribute to the social capital of the community. You are not being asked to do easy things. You will have moments of frustration and disappointments, as you set about organizing adult literacy classes, convincing parents to send their children to school, or trying to convey important health messages to the villagers. But you will also have many successes and you will discover the rich rewards that come from helping others.

I am pleased to welcome you into the growing service army of young people around the world. Together with all the others in national youth services perhaps in time, you will help to foster a level of peace and understanding that military armies throughout history have failed to accomplish.
